An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January rose in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the odds had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
