The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
